42nd Street: Movie Clip, Young and Healthy

42nd Street: Movie Clip, Young and Healthy

For a play that is in black and white and seems to pretty compared to the other films I have posted I realized one use of technology that surprised me. From 1:00 to 1:15 the bench they are sitting on falls into the stage. I thought it was pretty cool and a technology that lead into better stage effects for the future.

Our Favorite Son

Our Favorite Son

In the begining they have the main character come out of the scenery in the background. Very cool to watch and adds a cool effect for the audience.

Broadways Lost Treasures: Grand Hotel

Broadways Lost Treasures: Grand Hotel

They use this metal pole as a dancing tool to do some obscure and interesting dance moves that I have never seen before used in a play.

Broadways Lost Treasures: My One and Only

Broadways Lost Treasures: My One and Only

Throughout the entirety of the show they never use any sort of dialogue. They tell you their story through tap dancing. Very Interesting.

Christmas Carol Musical

Christmas Carol Musical

The technology I noticed was at the very end of this excerpt where the woman starts to fly and throws the sheet over the man.

Annie Broadway Thanksgiving

Annie Broadway Thanksgiving Day Parade

This was broadway scene that was played on the streets of New York at the Thanksgiving day parade. The New technology would be that it is not being played in an actual theater, but in the social public where the audience is behind and in front of the performers.

Technologies Used

The Technologies used were the live orchestra behind the stage as the actors walked around infront of it. I have never seen this theater so I thought this would be considered something thats different than the norm.

Mise en Scene

Man of the Mancha

Mise en Scene

Size: He is the main focus being that he is the largest figure on the screen.

Focus: Is on the man. He is one singing and the directors makes background blurred so the focus remains on the actor.

Lighting: The lighting is dim throughout most of the song by the man, but for about 30 seconds the light shines on him to increase the intensity of his words. I would say at first when it is dim and gloomy on set it is low key lighting and when the lights are shinning on him it would high key lighting.

Color: The man is wearing dark red and armor as if he was about to go into battle or he is coming back from battle.

Shot and Camera Proxemics: At first it starts out as an extreme long shot, works it self down into a long shot, then into a full shot for a definitive amount of time. As the intensity of the song increases the closer the camera gets, eventually ending in an extreme close up.

Camera Angles: Throughout the entirety of the song performed by the man I would say it was either a low angle or eye level shot. The reason I feel they used an eye level shot was show the emotion of the man as song grew more dramatic.

Lens/Filter/Stock: I would say it was shot with a Telephoto Lens considering it was on CBS and this the most high definition lens out of the other lens out there.

Subsidiary Contrasts: The only subsidiary contrasts would be the woman that the man is talking to.

Density: I would say the density of the background to moderate considering there really is not any scenery or background objects in the shots.

Composition: The composition is a binary composition because the woman he is talking to is directly next to him are on the same level. I would also say that there is vertical composition because the man is standing expressing himself strongly as he sings.

Form: The shots throughout the scene in Man of the Manca are closed. It directs the main focus on the man and blocks out whatever else is going on around him. The only information you really need to see is him expressing himself everything else is irrelevant.

Framing: I would say the framing in the beginning was relatively loose. The man or woman had room to move around, but as the closer the camera came to focus on the man the tighter the framing became.

Depth of Field: The shots in the beginning when both the man and woman are present are deep focus shots. It allows you to see a little bit of the background. As the focus becomes stronger on the man the shallower the shot gets, putting all the focus on the man.

Character Placement: The character placement usually stays in the center of the frame, but there are times when the camera moves in close on the man he will be on the right and left side of the frame.

Staging Positons: In the beginning he and the woman are in the profile position as he talks to her. During the climax of his song he faces the camera creating more intimate effect for the audience.

Character Proxemics: It starts out as a social distance then turns into a public distance.

Introduction

Hi my name is Marco Varrino. I am a senior and I plan to graduate in May with a Communications degree. I was suppose to have an internship with Fox 13 this semester, but complications occurred and I willing choose not to take the internship. With that in place I only had 2 days to register for classes, and this was one that was open. I hope to learn plenty on the development of art and technology considering that I do not know too much prior knowledge on the subject. I am eager to graduate and to move forward with my studies and future.
